چکیده
Prosodic Weight* Draga Zec Cornell University Introduction Syllable weight has been standardly characterized in terms of subsyllabic constituency, and computed by making reference to mora count, as argued in Hyman 1984, McCarthy and Prince 1986 and Hayes 1989, among others.1 Certain recent proposals, however, posit additional syllable weight distinctions, based on the sonority of the nucleus (e.g., Hayes 1995, Gordon 1999). While continuing to maintain that syllable weight in terms of mora count is the sole weight mechanism associated with the syllable as a prosodic constituent, I will argue that cases of weight distinctions based on the sonority of the nucleus fall under an entirely different rubric. My central claim is that such cases crucially reflect how the syllable relates to the other members of the prosodic hierarchy, notably the foot, bringing into relief the role of sonority in characterizing this relation. We will begin with the relevant properties of the prosodic hierarchy, given in (1) (see Nespor and Vogel 1986, McCarthy and Prince 1986 among others). 1. ω prosodic word φ foot σ syllable μ mora

This paper describes the design and evaluation of prosodically-sensitive concatenative units for a Persian text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis system. Thesyllables used are prosodically conditioned in the sense that a single conventional syllable is stored as different versions taken directly from the different prosodic domains of the prosodically labeled, read sentences. The three levels of the Per...
متن کاملProsodic Categorisation
The structural elements of the prosodic hierarchy and the ways in which phonological generalisations make reference to them are investigated. Assuming, as argued, that these elements constitute a universal set of primitives, the different types (categories) of such elements, especially the syllable, are examined more closely. Specifically, the traditional weight dichotomy of ‘heavy’ vs. ‘light’...
متن کاملProsodic elements to improve pronunciation in English language learners: A short report
The usefulness of teaching pronunciation in language instruction remains controversial. Though past research suggests that teachers can make little or no difference in improving their students’ pronunciation, current findings suggest that second language pronunciation can improve to be near native-like with the implementation of certain criteria such as the utilization of...
متن کاملThe Prosody of Discourse Structure and Content in the Production of Persian EFL Learners
The present research addressed the prosodic realization of global and local text structure and content in the spoken discourse data produced by Persian EFL learners. Two newspaper articles were analyzed using Rhetorical Structure Theory. Based on these analyses, the global structure in terms of hierarchical level, the local structure in terms of the relative importance of text segments and the ...
متن کاملTypological Variations in the Realization of the French Accentual Phrase
In this paper, we examine certain aspects of the French Accentual Phrase (AP) produced by monolingual Parisian and L2 speakers of French and discuss the implications language contact may have on our knowledge about the French prosodic system. We study the same text read by four monolingual Parisian speakers and two groups of different L2 speakers: four Central Africans and four Swiss Germans. T...
